Asperger’s Syndrome: developmental disability that includes impairment in social skills, communication, and behavior; there is no delay in language or cognitive development

Aspie: term used to describe someone with Asperger’s syndrome

Autie: term used to describe someone who is Autistic

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): describes a group of neurobiological developmental disorders, including Autism, Asperger’s, and PDD-NOS

Autistic Disorder: developmental disability that includes impairment in social skills, communication, and behavior; can include delays in language and cognitive development

Autistic Pride: movement that recognizes the positive attributes and contributions of those on the Autism Spectrum

Echolalia: repetition of speech

Neurodiversity: the idea that Autism is not a disease but a different way of being

Neurotypical (NT): a term used to describe non-Autistic individuals

Non-verbal: a person who is unable to communicate with typical speech

Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS): characterized by Autistic traits but does not meet the qualifications for Autistic Disorder or Asperger’s Syndrome

Savant: a person with an extreme gift or talent in a specific area, such as math or art

Stimming: rocking, flapping, or other stereotypical movements

Verbal: a person who is able to communicate with speech to some degree
